Non-Fiction Writing

The students have been doing AMAZING in non-fiction writing this week.  On Monday we made a KWL chart for Black Bears, Tuesday we did Polar Bears, and today we did Grizzly Bears.  Each day for writing they have to write 2 facts they learned.  They are allowed to use the KWL chart for reference if they need to.  Check out some of the students non-fiction books so far:

And our bears are still hibernating...

Bears!

Today we started learning all about bears! The children were super excited to bring their bears in and put them inside our cave (I will have to take pictures).  They were taking it VERY seriously.  They didn't want anyone to get near the cave, because they were afraid their bears may 'die' if they wake up in the middle of hibernation!
Today we focused on black bears, but each day we will have a new bear to focus on with new facts.  We are adding our new knowledge to our bear books daily.  The students are very excited to become non-fiction authors this week! I will take lots of pictures tomorrow of the projects we are working on. For now...I have this cute little bear tracer that we used to hold up some bear facts.  But, I thought he may also be cute for Valentine's Day?! So, I am uploading a quick little Love Is...writing prompt with the tracers as well.  Click on the picture below to download :)

Penguins!

My kids have REALLY enjoyed learning about penguins this past week.  We started off the week with our can, have, are chart
and throughout the week we read some fun penguin books, but we are trying to focus on non-fiction now with the new common core standards.  The kids can really pick up on so much information! Throughout the week they wrote about what they learned and made some cute projects!
I also made a 'life size' emperor penguin for the hallway.  The children have loved measuring themselves against the penguin.  I have overheard so many children from other classes talking about how they are bigger or smaller than an emperor penguin!

You can check out all of our Penguin centers HERE.

Next week we will move into our bear unit.  The children are going to LOVE it.  They get to bring in a teddy bear on Monday and the bear will hibernate in our cave all week.  We will wake them up from hibernation on Friday, just in time for pajama day! Can't wait!

Beautiful Day!!

This blog post is LONG overdue! Last week we were lucky enough to have an amazing children's book author and singer/songwriter visit our school!  Debbie Clement from Rainbows Within Reach came to work with grades K-2--which was set up by Denise over at Sunny Days (who I get to work with!!)
Before Debbie came I was able to read one of her books to my class, 'You're Wonderful.' The children loved the book! They were smiling and they were giggling when I read, "I know I'm beautiful."  Then, I realized there was a c.d. in the back that we could listen to (with the sign-language to the song as well)! So we went over the sign language and then I popped the c.d. in. Well...this was an automatic HIT! They children absolutely loved listening to the book being sung. It immediately was stuck in our heads and one of my little boys even said "this is a better song to have in our heads then Sid the Science Kid because it is telling us we are beautiful!"  Then the other students chimed in, "and wonderful, and magical..." We then talked about Debbie's pictures and how colorful they are.  I told them that I knew a little secret about Debbie, she loves rainbows! So they all wanted to make her a present.  We made these amazing heart dream catcher's which I will post about soon!
Then it was time to go meet Debbie herself! The kids were soo excited to see her and they had the best time! They sang, danced, learned sign language.  They laughed, participated, and had the chance to be silly.  All while learning so much!

I can't even begin to tell you how great Debbie was with the students.  All the teachers at school were walking around saying just how much their classes loved the author's visit! Debbie has 3 wonderful books.  I can't decide which one is my favorite!  She has Tall Giraffe with beautiful African melodies, Red, White, and Blue which was written just after 9/11 and is awesome, and You're Beautiful which is the song I can still sing over and over again!
Debbie has been kind enough to offer all of her books (which come with CD's) for 15% off just for YOU!!! Just click here and enter the promo code 'Smiles' at checkout!  I am telling you, if you can't get Debbie out at your school (which is a must!) then you have to introduce one of her books to your students. They are truly amazing!

Love to Joplin!

I am joining up with Mrs. Wills from Mrs. Wills Kindergarten to donate a unit to teachers in Joplin.  Mrs. Wills received this email below:

I teach in Joplin, which made worldwide news last May when our town was cut in half by an F5 tornado.  Many of our elementary schools were destroyed or damaged, and as teachers, we have had a roller coaster year.  I came from a meeting yesterday where many are struggling with the weight of all we are dealing with.  My request is this:  would you be willing to donate a created pack of your choosing to give away at a drawing at our upcoming district Kindergarten grade level meeting?  The meeting is Monday and I am sorry for the short notice but I did not realize until the meeting how down everyone is feeling.

How great would this be to just overload them with units/activities and really show them the love!!?? You can click the heart below to head over to Mrs. Wills to link up and join in on this WONDERFUL idea!!

Oh no!!

If you already downloaded the Love Monster Freebie, please head back over to TPT to re-download it.  Heather caught a little spelling error on the activity sheet.  Thanks SO much for letting me know! It is all fixed!

Real/Nonsense Word Freebie!

My students absolutely LOVED playing the Snowman Words/Silly Snowman Words game from  my Winter TPT unit!  They worked together to sort the words and then recorded them, they did so good! Even my low babies were sounding out the words and they were so proud of themselves.
I knew we would have to play this again soon, so I made a cute little love monster version.  If you would like grab your FREEBIE...click below :) Enjoy!!!

Brrr!

Even though this first week back was a little tiring, the weather has been gorgeous!! It has been cold down here for us South Floridians!! I finally got a chance to pull out my boots and long sleeves...so fun! I also got to pull out a box of hot chocolate from the back of my kitchen cabinet! This week was the perfect time to do some hot chocolate adjective words...
This was my example I made with the students, but when they did their own..it came out so much cuter! I wish I had taken a picture.  They colored their cups bright colors and even colored inside the cup brown to look like cocoa.  Much prettier than mine!!
Even though it is warming up already down here I know some of you will still be drinking hot chocolate for awhile longer (I am actually jealous of you!) I am attaching the pattern below in case you can use it!
