Fall Centers

Our Fall Centers are up and running and we are LOVING them!!
These centers work on a variety of skills that meet the needs of all of my students.  If you have students that can complete them independently, you can leave these centers at a center for independent work. However, if you have students that cannot do these independently, then you can use the activity during your guided reading time!

We have been working on rhyming lately and this center was so much fun! All of the rhyming words are also CVC words which made it easier for my high students to do independently. I did this center at my reading group with three of the four of my groups to make sure they understood the concept and were listening to the rhyming words correctly.
This sight word center was a HIT! Even my ESE students were having a blast with it and this was one of the first times that I saw them super excited at a center--they didn't want to leave! I think they really enjoyed using different writing utensils to write their words. I am telling you...normally my ESE group doesn't even want to write! Look at how great they did!
Nouns were another skill that we started during the first month of school and my kiddos pretty much have nouns down pat! They sorted their noun cards in a pocket chart before recording them on their activity sheet.
We played another rhyming game, Rhyme Time, during reading groups. I gave each student a tongue depressor with a 'thumbs up' on one side and a 'thumbs down' on the other.
I would flip two cards over and students would have to figure out whether the cards rhymed or not. Then, they would change their tongue depressor accordingly. We had lots of giggles during this game! It was fun!
Another center that my students worked on was Fall Sentence Scramble.  The sentences were all predictable sentences using very simple sight words that we have already worked on in class. I made sure to point out beforehand that all of the sentences should start with a capital letter and they all should end with a period.  Pointing that out to students always makes building sentences a little bit easier. I left a small pointer at this center as well for students to use as they reread the sentences to each other.
I always leave an 'I Can' chart at the center in hopes that my students can refer to that if they aren't sure what to do next.  These 'I Can' charts also have the standard in the bottom right hand corner which makes lesson planning easy!
My Fall Centers pack includes all of the above skills and more! There are activities to work on letters, letters/beginning sounds, short vowel sounds, middle sounds in CVC words, and an activity to work on building sight words.

Sight Words in Kindergarten [and a giveaway!]

How do you teach sight words? What sight words do you use?
I use the sight words from our reading series, Journeys.
(You can find that list on Ms. Kerri's blog for free HERE)
I introduce the words on Mondays and we add them to an ongoing  list we have on our white board. These words we read daily during our calendar time. We also add the words to our word wall. But, this year, I found an amazing way for children to practice reading AND spelling their sight words. All year, I have been using Maria's Interactive Sight Word Books. Her bundle of books has included all of the Journeys sight words thus far.
When I first introduced these books in August, I had children complete them with me during reading groups. However, they quickly became pros at completing them on their own and now they are in their word work center each week.
First, my students color in the featured sight word on the cover. This really helps them pay attention to the spelling of the sight words.
Then, the inside of the book contains predictable sentences using the featured sight word, which in this book is 'my'. Students have to cut out the letters provided in the pack, unscramble them, and paste the letters into the boxes on each page.
When my students are finished making their book they read it over a couple of times. Then, they add it to their book bin.  Each student has their own book bin and they are FULL of Maria's sight word books.
All of my children feel so successful during daily 5. They absolutely love pulling out their book bins and sitting down to practice reading! I will even catch them reading their books to a stuffed animal, which I love to see!!

Before Winter break I emptied all of the students' book bins, put their books in a zip-lock bag, attached a letter informing parents to continue practicing their sight words at home, and allowed the students to take their books homes. A couple hours after school was over, I received a few emails from parents who also fell in LOVE with these books! I am telling you...they are great! Not only do students feel successful, but they are reading AND spelling their sight words! Ah!!

Well, guess what?? I messaged Maria the other day to thank her for these AMAZING books and she was kind enough to donate one of her bundles for a giveaway!! You have the chance to receive Maria's Bundle of Books (part 1) for FREE!! That is a $50 value! (I am jealous!) All you need to do is enter below and I will choose a winner on Friday! Good luck!
Maria also just released a brand new pack last night, which you have to buy NOW!!! The new bundle is priced at $16 for 32 books--that is only 50 cents a book. And here is the thing--Maria will continuously add to this bundle. As she adds to the bundle, the price increases. BUT if you already purchased the bundle, you can download it again for FREE!!! So basically you will be saving TONS of money by purchasing it now! Yay...you can probably tell how excited I am by reading this haha! I love these books!!

Sight Word Fun!

I found the cutest sight word pack from Kristin over at A Teeny Tiny Teacher!

Click on the photo to check out Kristin's pack!
I have always done sight word folders with my students, but I was never totally organized with it! This pack makes it SO easy for me! It came with a great parent letter to send home explaining the process (which I LOVE by the way). The students will start out by reading all the lists; then, when they are finished with all 30 lists, they will go back and spell the words. I was doing both reading and spelling at the same time---umm hello? Why didn't I think of doing it this way!! The pack also comes with a super cute 'Congratulations' certificate when the students finish and a great organizer for me to track student progress.

I gave all the students new sight word folders. Each time they get a 100% on their list, they earn a sticker to decorate their folder. They are loving this!

How do you do your sight words??
