Easy and Fast Writing Center Addition

My kiddos (and I) start getting tired at the end of the year--so I like to start adding some new additions and new choices to our center rotations to keep things exciting!
Now that my kiddos are writing independently, letter writing is the perfect addition! They love writing letters to their friends and families, but I think they really love putting their letters into envelopes and 'mailing' their letters.
You can find my letter writing activity sheet and some other make your own cards in my writing pack on TpT, but you can also just leave blank, lined, paper for them to create their own!
I make sure that my students know my expectations when they begin this center.  Some of these expectations include: writing at least 4 sentences and addressing the envelope.
Then, I make the center a little bit more 'fun' by adding stickers to decorate their note and envelope, and I add this cute, little, mailbox found here.  Trust me, the mailbox is SUCH a motivator! (It's the little things.)
 Happy writing!!
Would love for you to share your writing ideas with me on the Kindergarten Smiles Facebook Page!

Valentine's Day Writing

Last year I saw these super cute heart shaped books at Target but I passed them by because I couldn't think of what I would do with them. Then this year they were back and they were just too cute to pass by again! I actually bought plain red ones for my class and then after the fact, found these awesome rainbow ones!! (Maybe next time.)
The books have 16 plain white pages inside and I decided that these would be super fun to use to throughout the month to spruce up our writing and get the kids excited!!
I created different pages that fit perfectly into the Target book.  All of the pages are about people we love or places, things, and even the food we love!
The kids have really enjoyed working on these books so far and they are taking a lot of pride in their work (which is an extra bonus)!
These are going to be perfect Valentine's keepsakes for not only the kids to enjoy, but their parents to hold onto for years and years to come!
And don't worry, if you can't find the blank Target books, I added in a cover page that you can use to create your own writing notebooks for your class. I received this picture from a fellow teacher and she has her Valentine's books ready to go!
You can grab the writing pages below:
They are also available in Spanish here:
Don't forget to PIN this image to Pinterest and save this idea for next year!
This year I let my daughter pick out her own Valentine's (then I just ordered the same ones from my son), and to my surprise she picked these super cute pizzas!! Pizza is all the rage right now, haha!
These are from Oriental Trading and they made Valentine's so easy.  They deliver quickly and these pizzas already had a cute tag on them! I didn't even really need to print and attach my own tag!
My daughter is so excited to pass these out! And I am excited that we finally have a cute little Valentine gift that isn't candy, haha!

Writing Collaboration on the Mayflower [Freebie Included]

I LOVE collaboration projects in the classroom.  I start them very early on in the year and by now, they are awesome at working together, sharing, talking, making sure everyone in their group 'agrees', presenting, and so much more!
During the month of November we spend a lot of time on the Mayflower and learning about Pilgrims and Native Americans.  One of my favorite books to read (I read it throughout the week because it is lengthy) is ...If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620
Throughout the week we add all of our 'learned' Mayflower facts onto our KWL.  On Friday during our writing block we do a collaboration writing project.
Each table group has to work together to think of at least 3 Mayflower facts and record their facts, working together to sound out their words.
They can use our vocabulary word cards from the unit to help them spell as well (vocab cards provided HERE).
Since there can be up to 5 students in the group, we always want to make sure that everyone has a 'job'. The kids are great at coming up with jobs for one another and sharing their responsibilities.  One of their favorite jobs is tracing with a sharpie.
As the groups finished their facts, they went to the carpet while they waited for their classmates to finish up.  When all groups were ready, we presented our Mayflower facts.
They read what they wrote and when they were finished we made sure to celebrate their success!
After each group read their facts they were allowed to go over to our Mayflower and tape their facts onto the ship!
This is always one of my favorite bulletin boards! You can also add little pilgrim faces into the Mayflower from my craft HERE. You can also see a picture from my Instagram page HERE.
'There was a poop deck.' is a fact that makes it onto my Mayflower EVERY single school year! Definitely a class favorite!
Now for a little freebie!  We only have school Monday and Tuesday this week so I wanted to have a little fun with the students before we leave for Thanksgiving break.  I thought this dice activity would be perfect for a little 'bonding' activity.
We are going to sit in a circle and take turns passing the dice.  Students will have to roll the dice and answer the questions that they rolled.
This freebie includes a make your own dice template as well as inserts for the pocket dice seen HERE. Download the freebie by clicking on the image below.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Writing Center in Kindergarten [What should you have there? and more!]

This year I updated some of the activities in my writing center and I am pretty excited about the changes!

I have most of my writing centers in a pocket chart (the pocket chart you can find HERE and see below).  These activities are not always assigned.  Sometimes I have something completely different that I need them to work on in the writing center, sometimes these are used as early finished, other times I give them the choice to pick anything that they want to work on!

These activities are definitely not all introduced at once, it takes time! I introduce a lot of the easier writing sheets right away.  For instance, write the room is actually introduced the first week of school.  Some of my kids write 5 words during the 15 minute center and some of my kids fill the entire page.  It doesn't matter, as long as they are understanding the work and writing!  Another page I introduce at the beginning of the year is the page seen below.
This page is easy for students, they love drawing the pictures, and they get their words from either my word work cards or my thematic word binder (also seen later in this post).

Another page I introduce pretty early on is 'Write the Globe'.  Yes, this activity is just 'copying' words and I know some teachers may not see the educational value behind this; however, I really just want my students to LOVE writing early on and this center is one that they really do love!  My kids love when I read the words to them that they wrote, they are fascinated by the globe, and later on in the year they really remember these places they wrote down and they start to grow their interest in the world. I actually move on to having students write letters to mom and dad trying to convince them to take them on vacation to some of these places!
Writing our color words is also a center I introduce early on and the students are very successful with this.  The color words can be found on my color posters hanging in my room or even in my thematic words binder for the kids to use if needed.
Rainbow friends is always fun for the kids. They just LOVE writing their friends names.  For this activity I let them walk around the room and copy their friends names from their desk tags before returning to the writing center to write their names again in rainbow colors!
Another writing page that can be found in our writing center is writing the ABC words we find in our ABC books.  I love this page because some of the books don't point out the alphabet letters that easily.  Students have to search for the words on the page.
Some activities for later in the year may be writing cards (I love you cards, Happy Birthday cards, etc).
They really start to enjoy letter writing towards the end of the year. I leave envelopes and a mini mailbox at the center as well.
They love 'mailing' their letters (I deliver them at the end of the day).
All of these activities and more can be found in my Work on Writing pack.

This year I am also going to keep some emoji page options in my pocket chart.  I think students are loving emojis right now and are going to be super excited to have these as an option!
Click on the image below to see more.

Now, what else can be found in my writing center?

I keep other activities right in the center so that way when my students are done working on what was assigned, there is no reason for them to tell me they 'are done'.  I want early finisher activities to be right in an arms reach and I want activities that my students will enjoy so that there isn't any complaining!

Of course students can choose another item from the writing center pocket chart seen above; however, I also leave other activities to choose from.

At the center I have a basket with white boards, dry erase markers, and my writing and word work cards.  I let students draw pictures on the white boards as long as they write the words as well!! Later in the year this turns into writing a sentence or a story.

I have letter stamps and ink pads in another basket.  Students can spell words on a piece of blank paper with the letters stamps.  Again, later in the year I have students actually spelling a short sentence with the letter stamps and illustrating their sentence.

I also have this new binder, which I am super excited about!! I added a cover sheet to the binder (which will be added as a freebie at the end of this post) so students know exactly what they can do if they choose to work on this.
Inside the binder I copied From The Pond's directed drawings.  I copied them on colored card stock, just to add some color into the binder, then I added each page into a page protector.  Students really shouldn't need to take these pages out of the binder to use.
Like seen above, students can draw a picture with the help of the directed drawing, color the picture, add a setting, and later on in the year they can start to write about their picture.
There will be times in the year where I actually assign them work from this binder too.  For instance, on 'apple day' the writing center assignment may be to draw an image of Johnny Appleseed using the directed drawing, add details, and write a sentence or fact about Johnny.
I also have another writing binder as an option.  Again, this can be used as an early finisher or there may be times where I actually assign work from this binder.  The cover of this binder (found in the freebie below) tells students their options on what they can do while they use the pages inside the binder.  This binder correlates with a lot of the writing center activity pages too!
Inside the binder there are thematic words for the entire year! The themes range from school words to ocean words and Halloween words to Christmas words.  This binder has you covered! I printed the pages onto white card stock and inserted the pages into page protectors.
The students will use these words to draw a picture, write a sentence or story, label a picture, write an opinion piece, etc.  There are SO many options to choose from!
This binder can be found HERE or by clicking on the image below.

You can find both of the binder covers for free by clicking on the image below.

Writing Center

Ever since I opened up my writing center to 'choice' writing, my planning/life has been so much easier!! Every activity seen below I introduce to my students one at a time, starting the first week of school with write the room! I then move on to 'Write the Globe', 'I Can Draw and Write Words', 'Color Words' and some of the other easier activities.  As the year moves on I can start introducing some of the harder activities like 'How to' Writing and 'All About' Writing.
As each activity is introduced, it gets added into the pocket chart organizer you see below.  Then it is available for kids to use when they finish early!
I even added in some toy magazines that I received in the mail--the kids LOVE writing shopping lists!
'I Can Draw and Write Words' is an easy activity for beginning writers. They can use thematic word walls or books to complete.
I love the 'Dictionary Hunt'.  I really like the fact that they are getting used to a dictionary and know how to use one at such a young age ;)
'All About' writing has now become one of my students' favorites! They love writing all about me, or the principal, or I've even heard them interviewing each other and writing all about their peers. Love it!
They also use my portable word walls for their 'All About' writing.
'Write the Globe' never gets old with my kids.  They love discovering new places. Most of them have taken this a step further and are now writing letters to their parents telling them where they want to go on the globe and why.
I also ALWAYS leave cards and envelopes in the writing center.  They love making cards for their family members, peers, teachers, etc.
I have now introduced all of the activities in the writing center and my students are able to complete them all independently.  Now that they are all hanging in the wall organizer (found HERE), I don't have to plan anything for the writing center.  They go to the center and CHOOSE which activity they want to work on.  When kids have the 'choice' in their centers, they work SO much better!

All of these writing activities can be found in my store by clicking on the image below.
